Hi Leah,
I enjoyed reading your comment to Mr. X about his website and I have a couple of questions about turning off java script. Why would searchers turn off java script? Also, I tried turning off java script and the site looks the same (could I have dones some thing wrong or perhaps I need to know specifically what to look for)?

Hi Eric,
That is not the same website that Mr. X posted about. I have to imagine he contacted the franchise to inquire about why his website was not working vs other franchisee’s whose sites did work. This new website has issues in regards to SEO, but it is 75% better than his last site which barely functioned.
To see a difference you can look at my website with java on and off. A side menu functions on java and is not visible until you turn on java. www.elc-seo.com
The main 2 reasons a searcher will turn off java is speed & safety. Since almost everyone is on at least DSL vs the dial up of a few yrs ago, speed is kind of a moot point.
Safety is a huge issue!!! I would say 1/2 of all internet attacks come from compromised websites. The compromise can be from unintentional and innocent people using a script upon their website and never know that it contains malicious code. All the website owner knows is that it is a free script that does whatever they wanted to accomplish.
The other form is from not “hardening” a website. Hardening is much like securing a home. There are basic things to do keep it safe, and extra steps to really secure it. There are tons of programs that scan websites for obvious insecurities. It’s like checking for open doors. Once an opening is found, a malicious script can be put upon the website w/the owner never knowing.
I personally always have scripts turned off. I only turn them on if my usage of a website is impaired. I do this because even though my pc is locked down (I come from a internet security background) I know that no security is 100%. Visiting a website is like opening a door to a stranger and inviting them in. You take the good with the bad.
I would recommend that you use Firefox as a browser and use the Addon Noscript.
Have a great weekend,
Leah
