My head hurts! I’m reading my fav Internet site to catch up on all things tech & this is the headline: “BP Buys Top Google Result for “Oil Spill” ” SERIOUSLY! You Spin Me Round (Like A Record) by Dead or Alive is the song that I can’t get rid of.
BP has purchased sponsored links that appear at the top of Google and Yahoo’s search results for terms like “oil spill” in its attempts to improve its public image in the wake of its massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
OK, before I even go into a rant on how many levels this is wrong on. I’m gonna give the kudos. Honestly, this is a smart use of the Google search results. To my knowledge and I could be very wrong… but this seems to be the first major use of AdWords in a media spin public relations frenzy. I grudgingly admire the clever use of the top spot on Google.
Undeniably there will be those who totally drink the Kool Aid & love it. Yes I should probably be more Politically Correct. But I can’t. When I was hired here I was told that I can and should always stand up for my ethics, even if they are unpopular. Often as Internet professionals we are given information that is very private and privileged to our clients and they trust us to uphold professional and ethical standards. This is a holocaust upon the environment. It affects countless species and humans who depend upon these waters for their life and their families.
My heart goes out to all of you affected!
